Ecology and multiplication of horticultural species
Research directions
Research directions/objectives:
- Breeding and introducing new vegetable species into cultivation
- creation of new varieties of vegetable species with genetic resistance to biotic and abiotic factors.
- enriching the vegetable gene pool by obtaining biological creations intended for obtaining varieties and hybrids from the Solanaceae family: tomatoes, peppers, eggplants
- promoting in culture new genotypes with high productive potential, adapted to the technologies of current climatic conditions
- Bio-ecology of the main pathogens and pests in vegetable growing, prognosis and warning for the management of phytosanitary treatments
- Studies on the biology and ecology of major diseases and pests in vegetable growing, in order to protect vegetable crops in protected areas;
- Forecasting the dynamics of the populations of the main pest agents, warning of their appearance in crops, establishing measures, methods and means of chemical, biological and integrated cotontrol, and the optimal time for interventions.
- Integrated technological sequences applied to vegetable species of the Solanaceae group, with favorable impact on the environment and rural development
- Study of the behavior of the newly created varieties to the attack of the main pathogenic and harmful agents found in the species of the Solanaceae group;
- Preventing the emergence of the resistance phenomenon of the Tuta absoluta pest to insecticides;
- Technological solutions to prevent the emergence of resistance of pathogens and pests to certain active substances in products used for plant protection;
- Evaluation of the economic efficiency of plant protection technological sequences in combating diseases and pests in vegetable growing.
- Improving the nutritional conditions of vegetable species in protected spaces
- The development of new and/or improved technologies for establishing and maintaining vegetable crops;
- Optimized technological sequences of soil fertilization (fertigation) and plant fertilization (foliar fertilization), for vegetable species: products, moments and doses;
- Solutions regarding the irrigation of vegetable species: moments, watering norms, application methods;
- Establishing the effect of bioactive substances on the chemical composition of fruits, pulp firmness, fruit coating color, and chlorophyll fluorescence; synthesizing, transforming, and translocating the assimilated substances from leaves to fruits and improving their quality
- Monitoring biometric indicators regarding the growth and fruiting characteristics of new vegetable genotypes.
Results
The tomato breeding activity resulted in the production of 11 certified/patented varieties for cultivation in the field and protected areas:
